FDA, CDC push ahead with new COVID-19 boosters for kids without proper data

An opinion by Nicole Saphier, M.D. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has authorized the bivalent COVID-19 booster shots from both Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna in kids as young as 5 years old. Approval from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) followed in lockstep, as they have for the last two years.  The new, updated bivalent booster

Scientists on alert as new Covid strain tears through ‘multiple countries’

A new Covid variant is ripping through “multiple countries”, with experts fearing it could be even more transmissible than the BA. 5 Omicron strain. Named BF. 7 – short for BA. 5.2.1.7 – the new variant is spreading faster than most other variants of interest that scientists are currently tracking in the US. While it

FDA expected to authorize new Covid boosters without data from tests on people

The lack of human data means officials likely won’t know how much better the new shots are — if at all — until the fall booster campaign is well underway. The updated Covid vaccine boosters, a reformulated version targeting the BA.5 omicron subvariant, could be available around Labor Day. They’ll be the first Covid shots distributed

BA.2.12.1, BA.4, and BA.5 escape antibodies elicited by Omicron infection

SARS-CoV-2 Omicron sublineages BA.2.12.1, BA.4 and BA.5 exhibit higher transmissibility over BA.21. The new variants’ receptor binding and immune evasion capability require immediate investigation. Here, coupled with Spike structural comparisons, we show that BA.2.12.1 and BA.4/BA.5 exhibit comparable ACE2-binding affinities to BA.2. Importantly, BA.2.12.1 and BA.4/BA.5 display stronger neutralization evasion than BA.2 against the plasma

New COVID-19 Vaccine Effectiveness Data Showcase Protection Gained by 3rd and 4th Doses

A third and fourth COVID-19 vaccine dose offered substantial protection among adults with healthy immune systems who were eligible to receive them during Omicron variant evolution in early 2022, according to a new MMWR published today. The findings of this study, in conjunction with recently published data showing people infected with BA.2 may also have antibodies that can

Subvariant May Be More Dangerous Than Omicron: Study

Abstract Soon after the emergence and global spread of a new severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) Omicron lineage, BA.1 (ref1, 2), another Omicron lineage, BA.2, has initiated outcompeting BA.1. Statistical analysis shows that the effective reproduction number of BA.2 is 1.4-fold higher than that of BA.1. Neutralisation experiments show that the vaccine-induced humoral immunity

Recurrent COVID-19 reinfection and re-emergence of a chronic infection reservoir?, a Brazilian study

Recurrent COVID-19 including evidence of reinfection and enhanced severity in thirty Brazilian healthcare workers Highlights We describe 33 patients with recurrent COVID19 and a positive PCR. Recurrence is associated with working as a healthcare professional, blood-group A, and low IgG response to infection. Evidence from differential virus sequencing between the first and second episode supports de
