Midwest College of Oriental Medicine COVID-19 Preparedness Plan

COVID-19 Preparedness  and Clinic Reopening Plan

Update September 21, 2022

The College leadership delayed partial re-opening until March 2021 to give the administration, faculty, and students a chance to get the COVID-19 vaccination. The College continues to monitor the guidance of the CDC and the state and local health departments. Their recommendation and mandates as implemented as required.

The good news is that no cases of COVID-19 transmission occurred due to supervisors, interns, and patients participating in the College clinics in Racine, Wisconsin, or Skokie, Illinois, through contact tracing. Since March of 2021, the College’s interns have delivered over 6000 Acupuncture treatments.

Both campuses are approved to offer COVID-19 testing for faculty, students, and patients. The College maintains a sufficient inventory of tests due to early planning for the variants.

Screening of employees, students, and patients

The College continues remote monitoring of body temperature through airport-style remote infrared thermometers.

Employee and student notifications of illness

The College administration provided information about the presentation of COVID-19 symptoms to the administration, faculty, and students. Individuals who had these symptoms are directed to immediately obtain a COVID-19 test and follow their healthcare practitioner’s guidelines for quarantine if they test positive.

Hand hygiene, respiratory etiquette, and personal protective equipment

Clinical supervisors monitor hand hygiene, and posters are placed in bathrooms and clinical areas. Social distancing is still maintained and monitored. Early in the pandemic, the College obtained sufficient PPE, and inventory levels remained constant. The College maintains an inventory of at least 1000 KN95 masks distributed free of charge.

Engineering and administrative controls for social distancing

The College has maintained UV air sterilization methods to clean and keep the air free of bacteria and viruses.

Food preparation and meals

At both campuses, social distancing continues when all personnel is using kitchenettes.

Cleaning, disinfecting, decontamination, and ventilation

The College has maintained a strict cleaning regimen and has contracted qualified cleaning companies to clean and disinfect the College’s clinics.

Communications and training provided to managers and workers

Clinic Directors have updated the entire clinic staff to ensure that the most up-to-date information is communicated to the personnel. The site coronavirusplan.net has been active with more than 35,000 visitors during the last year, providing current information about the virus.

Administration and supervision are necessary to ensure the effective implementation of the plan.

Dr. William Dunbar, College President, meets with the Wisconsin and Illinois campus directors multiple times per week to ensure that all personnel follow the planning guideline and discuss necessary changes.

Communication about the plan

The plan is posted to coronavirusplan.net and communicated to the relevant personnel by the campus directors. These communications are ongoing in person or by phone.

For additional questions about the plan and update, contact William Dunbar, Ph.D., College President at 262-554-2010

The original plan was implemented in March 2021

MCOM is committed to providing a safe and healthy educational and workplace environment for our students, employees, and patients. To ensure a safe and healthy workplace, we have developed the following COVID-19 Preparedness Plan in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The administration, employees, faculty, and students are responsible for implementing and complying with all aspects of this COVID-19 Preparedness Plan. All faculty members and students have the administration’s full support in enforcing the provisions of this plan. Our goal is to mitigate the potential for transmission of COVID-19 in our workplaces, campuses, and clinics, which requires full cooperation among our administration faculty, students, and patients. Through this cooperative effort, we can establish and maintain the safety and health of our employees, faculty, students, and workplaces.
